Surf Trip Destination in Bali, Indonesia

Dicovery Kartika

The Kartika Plaza Hotel is the perfect place to stay for surfers wanting to get into the Bali thing. Just meters south of the hotel, Kuta Reef, Airport Rights and Airport Lefts are a good introduction to the kinds of long, fast, powerful reef waves lurking farther up the Bukit Peninsula.

The Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel is a large thoroughly modern resort hotel on Kuta Beach. This is one of dozens of similar hotels around Kuta, but Waterways has chosen to affiliate with this one, because of its location on the south end of Kuta Beach. Guests here are always within sight of the reef breaks at Kuta Reef and the Airport.

Kuta is at the base of the Bukit Peninsula and gives you access to miles and miles of beach breaks, but also is equidistant from either side of the Bukit Peninsula: Seven miles from Sanur and seven miles from Padang-Padang.

Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel offers all that westerners have come to expect: large marble lobby, multiple restaurants, bars, pools, spa facilities, tennis and business centers.

The Kartika Plaza Hotel has 318 different accommodations divided into Rooms, Suites and Villa. All of the rooms have air conditioning, refrigerators, private bathrooms, satellite TV, mini bar, bottled mineral water, radio and coffee makers.

There are six types of Rooms: Superior, Ocean Facing Room, Private Garden Room Private Garden Pool Room, Garden View Family Room and Ocean Front Room.

There are four Suite levels: Junior Suite, Family Suite, Ocean View Suite, Presidential Suite and six private Beachfront Villas.

This is the place where a surfer can bring the family and not feel guilty or unsafe when leaving them behind as they explore the Bukit Peninsula. The resort has a large, fresh-water pool and swimming is generally safe along the beach in front of the hotel.

The Kartika Plaza Hotel has a wide variety of cafes and restaurants, and if you can’t find what you want on the premises, there are a seemingly endless number of restaurants, cafes and clubs nearby.

Kuta is the Waikiki of Bali, a surf zone fronted by a vast tourist maze of luxury hotels, bungalows, cafes, restaurants and more surf shops than you ever thought possible. While typically crowded, this stretch of beach can and does still offer mile after mile of tropical A-frame peaks for surfers of all abilities.

Just south of the hotel, Kuta Reef, Airport Rights and Airport Lefts are a good introduction to the type of long, fast, powerful reef waves lurking farther out on the Bukit Peninsula. These waves break on outer reefs that protect the airport from the ocean and most surfers hire boats for a faster ride out to the lineup.

Surf guides can easily be arranged to access any of the breaks north or south of the hotel.

Seasons & Weather

Seasons & Weather

From December through February the west/north-west trades blow offshore on the right-breaking reefs of the eastern coast. March and April are transition months into the dry season when winds are often light and variable. During these months ocean conditions are glassy with some infrequent and scattered rain showers.

May through early October sees the dry season with little rain and consistent east/southeast winds blowing offshore along the west coast and that long series of lefts running down the Bukit Peninsula from Outside Corner Ulus to Kuta Beach.

May to October is also the best season for Grajagan, when the regular southeast trade winds meet up with Indian Ocean groundswells.

October and November are again transitional months when the rain will start to return and the winds will go slack as they rotate back to northwest.

The weather is warm and humid year round; lows may get into the low/mid 70’s, and highs into the upper 80’s. The warmest and most humid months are December and January while the coolest driest months of the year are June and July.

Water temperatures are mid 70’s to low 80’s following the same pattern as the air temperatures.

Balinese surf season starts up some time in March/April and runs all the way through October, with the biggest swells often occurring May through September.
